Dalby Offshore Services Ltd is also a recognised training centre for RYA shorebased courses, as well as being approved by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency to run some MCA approved courses.
All the courses are run at our approved venue in Maryport, West Cumbria. The venue is close to the town centre where there are cafes and shops, and there are hotels and B&B’s both in the town and locally.
The courses we run are as follows:
All the RYA Shorebased theory courses are run over a period of 40 hours. This takes 5 full days of training at our venue. We provide ample desk space for each student and provide tea and coffee for refreshment during the day. The courses are fairly intensive running from 9.00am through to 5.00pm on a daily basis. There is no age limit to any of the course set out below.
This course is designed for potential skippers with little or no background knowledge or experience. It focuses on basic seamanship and navigation and, on completion, would leave the student with background knowledge of how to skipper a small vessel in and out of known harbours, in local waters during the hours of daylight.
There are two exam papers to be sat at the end of the week.
A little further up the scale this course is aimed at those with an assumed knowledge at Day skipper level, and is aimed at those who are wishing to progress up to a Yachtmaster certificate of competence. This piece of paper is mandatory for those also wishing to get their foot onto the MCA Masters ladder at Master >200GT Limited, and Officer of the Watch < 3,000GT
The course builds on the Day skipper course and looks at coastal and offshore navigation, planning and pilotage. After the course the candidate has the background knowledge to skipper a vessel in coastal and offshore waters both day and night. The course has three exam papers to be sat at the end of the week.
This course concentrates on Astro Navigation and Ocean Meteorology. It is expected that you will have an assumed knowledge up to Yachtmaster Offshore level. This ticket is mandatory if you wish to proceed on to Master <200GT Unlimited, Chief Mate and Master <500 GT and beyond. The course has 1 exam paper at the end of the week, and leaves the student with the background knowledge to skipper a vessel on an ocean passage.
In order to get your Yachtmaster certificate endorsed, or to get your foot on to the MCA ladder, you need to have 4 basic STCW certificates. Dalby Offshore is able to deliver one of those tickets, which is the Elementary First Aid Course. The course is 7 hours long and is delivered at our training venue.
